What is what does it mean when your phone goes straight to voicemail?

When your phone goes straight to voicemail, it typically means one of the following:

  • The recipient's phone is turned off or has no service: This is the simplest explanation. If their phone is off or can't connect to the network, calls will be routed directly to voicemail.

  • The recipient has enabled "Do Not Disturb" (DND) or "Focus Mode": These features silence incoming calls and notifications. In some cases, they will also send callers directly to voicemail. See more information about Do Not Disturb.

  • The recipient has manually sent you to voicemail: They may have consciously ignored your call and chosen to send it to voicemail.

  • You are blocked: If the recipient has blocked your number, your calls will usually go straight to voicemail. Some phones also may not notify blocked contacts that the call has been directed to voicemail. More info on blocked numbers.

  • Call forwarding is enabled: The recipient may have set up call forwarding to send all incoming calls directly to their voicemail.

  • Network issues: Sometimes, temporary network problems on either your end or the recipient's end can cause calls to be misdirected to voicemail.

  • Voicemail is full: Although less common, if the recipient's voicemail inbox is full, new voicemails cannot be recorded and callers might be sent directly to the voicemail greeting without the option to leave a message.
